As I was finishing the 2015 Fall Semester and my work as an MFA Student, I participated in the University of Montana's Instagram takeover called "Eye of the Grizzly." Introducing our second #EyeOfTheGrizzly for this week, Geoff Cole @g30ff4y. He is a media arts MFA student and will showcase his work, which includes 3D printing. Sitting in front of the #3dprinter deep in McGill hall. Here I spend time studying machine movement and tool paths, materials and layer adhesion as well as single and dual extrusion. I have made a bit of a mess in the past few weeks printing my final project, but have mastered the art and science of #additivemanufacturing through #fusedfilamentfabrication Thank you for following along on this #griztagram journey to my #mfa in @um_media_arts What have you mastered in your time at the University of Montana? #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 16, 2015 at 10:31am PST One more print to go. This printed part, called a waveguide, will be both decorative and functional in relation to the tweeter section of the #3dprinted #speaker enclosures. I am also shooting a time lapse to show the print process later tonight. #grizstagram See the speaker project in progress on my account. #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 16, 2015 at 3:06pm PST Time lapse of the waveguide printing this evening. Printed in bronze plastic with coffee plastic supports. Everyone on campus will appreciate the automatic light switch. #grizstagram The speakers will be unveiled at the @um_media_arts Fall Expo Thursday evening at 7pm at The Roxy Theater (@theroxy406) #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A video posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 16, 2015 at 8:55pm PST A wise Jedi once said 3D Print, you must. #the3dprintawakens #grizstagram I have melted quite a bit of plastic filament over past two years. Tonight I present the journey from Broadcaster to Maker and discuss the failures, growth and success in a short talk called 200+ Celsius. It's part of the @um_media_arts Fall Expo at @theroxy406 tonight at 7pm in Theater 3. #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 17, 2015 at 11:19am PST Thank you for all the support this week! The presentation went well @theroxy406 and @um_media_arts Fall Expo this evening. Following the talk I stuck around to answer questions and speak with event goers about the #3dprinting process. I am pictured here on the left, my grad committee chair, Professor Greg Twigg on the right. Two of my final #speaker projects are featured on the table. #grizstagram #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 17, 2015 at 8:24pm PST One last #listeningsession before the break. #grizstagram Professor Rick Hughes enjoying the sounds from my #3dprinted #speakers My first conversation with Rick happened in 2004 while I was still an undergraduate student in Michigan. I spoke with him a few more times before applying for the @um_media_arts grad program in 2012. Who are the pivotal educators that have guided you in your learning experiences at UM? #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 18, 2015 at 2:46pm PST With the late start today due to the snow, I thought it would only be appropriate to #3dprint a snowman. These are the first few layers in real time. I'll post a photo later today of the completed print. #grizstagram #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A video posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 19, 2015 at 1:27pm PST While I was #3dprinting a #snowman this afternoon, some folks made a real one outside in front of McGill Hall. #letitsnow #grizstagram The snowman is #thing195839 on @thingiverse #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 19, 2015 at 3:35pm PST #grizstagram #deergram This afternoon's print pictured in front of McGill Hall was #thingiverse #thing571949 - Holiday Deer. I'm usually on campus really early and see deer grazing about on campus. The print today uses @proto_pasta #aromaticcoffeepla In my first semester #3dprinting I supported the Proto Pasta Kickstarter that included three new exotic materials. The speakers I've posted pictures of this week were printed with their #cfpla which has carbon fibers in the plastic. Yesterday's snowman was printed with the filament from the original kickstarter #hightemppla spool. #eyeofthegrizzly | @g30ff4y A photo posted by University of Montana (@umontana) on Dec 20, 2015 at 2:55pm PST I'm heading out. Grades in, printers off, just this one last #grizstagram for the weekend. I'm ending where my takeover began; at the #3dprinting station, where things have been cleaned up quite a bit from where you first saw me a few days ago. It's been a wild ride for the past three years of grad school! A few more gray hairs and few less to turn gray. Thanks @umontana for the opportunity to share work, insight and reflection with this community.
